Aim: This paper seeks to examine how the various cultural aspects of the Northeast Indian state of Assam are embedded in some of the select stories of Jahnavi Barua in her work titled Next Door. Approach: The short stories in the collection titled Next Door by Jahnavi Barua have been critically analysed and the representation of the cultural symbols and markers of the region in these narratives are traced and examined. Outcome: The Northeastern region is sharply distinguished from mainland India not only for its unique geographical features but also for its diverse population and myriad cultures. The literary works that have emerged from India’s Northeast bear the distinctive impressions of the cultural ethos of the region. This paper brings out that Jahnavi Barua’s stories are deeply rooted to the soil – that is Assam. Most of her stories reflect various aspects of local culture of the people residing in the Brahmaputra valley. The land, including its geographical features like the hills, forests, lakes, agricultural fields and the rivers, traditions, customs and rituals are amply represented in Barua’s stories. Conclusion: Jahnavi Barua’s stories are infused with the markers or signifiers of the local culture. Strong attachment to the region’s culture and striking representation of the local rhythms of life are the distinguishing features of Barua’s stories.
