Abstract

Aim: This study looks at how renowned Indian novelist R.K. Narayan depicts and explores societal identities in his short stories. The purpose of this essay is to examine the complexities and difficulties brought about by various characters in Narayan’s works, with a particular focus on subjects like caste and class distinctions, gender roles, and cultural expectations. The study uses qualitative analysis as a methodology to interpret texts. The study analyzes a few of Narayan’s short stories through careful reading and textual analysis. Mythology and Approach: The research Investigates how Narayan illustrates the complexities and difficulties connected with distinct social identities by probing into the characters’ experiences, struggles, and interactions within their social environments. Outcome: The study examines how Narayan’s characters negotiate social duties and challenge the restrictions placed on them. Narayan discusses the subject of caste and class inequalities in his works. Additionally, it examines how gender roles are portrayed; shedding light on the challenges faced by female characters as well as their aspirations for independence and self-expression. This research paper also explores the tension between tradition and modernity as characters battle with their cultural and religious identities. It examines the conflicts that exist between preserving cultural history and embracing a changing world, providing insights into the difficulties people have in recognizing their social identities. Conclusion and Suggestion: Through this research, the aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how Narayan’s short stories illuminate the diverse social identities within Indian society. The findings contribute to the existing literature on Narayan’s works, highlighting the author’s exploration of social dynamics, identity formation, and the interplay between tradition and modernity.
