Aims: The aim of this research paper is to explore the role of folklore in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and its significance in portraying the traditional Igbo society, while also examining how folklore is employed to negotiate the tensions between indigenous traditions and colonial influence. This study seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of how Achebe’s use of folklore contributes to a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context within the novel, shedding light on the dynamic interactions between tradition and change in a postcolonial African setting.
Methodology and Approaches: The research employs a multi-faceted approach, including literary analysis to closely examine the integration of folklore elements within "Things Fall Apart" and their impact on the narrative’s themes and characters, a postcolonial lens to investigate the novel’s response to colonialism and cultural imperialism, an ethnographic approach to explore the authentic cultural practices and belief systems of the Igbo society as depicted in the text, a comparative analysis to juxtapose Achebe’s use of folklore with other African literary works, a historical contextualization to situate the novel within Nigeria’s colonial history. These methodologies and approaches collectively provide a comprehensive analysis of the use of folklore in Achebe’s novel, shedding light on its cultural, historical, and literary significance.
Conclusion and Suggestions: This research has unveiled the multifaceted role of folklore in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. Achebe’s skilful use of proverbs, folktales, rituals, and cultural traditions enriches the narrative, portraying a dynamic traditional Igbo society facing colonial influence. Folklore serves as a testament to Achebe’s deep familiarity with native materials and his commitment to reiterating oral tradition. It underscores the vital role of folklore in capturing the essence of Igbo culture, resisting colonial representations, and contributing to the legacy of African literature.
